Knowing the specific audience you want to attract to your site provides the foundation for the next step in your SEO process... defining key words.

Key words are the descriptive phrases your prospects use in Yahoo or Google searches to try to find out information about your service. When people use search engines, they are often not looking for a specific company or person, but rather for information about a subject. In short, they are in the research phase of their buying process.

Having defined your targeted audience, and knowing what about your particular service that they might be looking for... put yourself in their shoes and try to figure out what word, or group of words they would enter into the search box to find you. These are your key words.

Key words come in two flavors ... general and specific. For instance, if they were looking for information about services that VisiTell offers, they might use a very general word like marketing. Or they might use a very specific group of words, like internet service marketing in Tampa, Florida.

There might be a hundred terms you can come up with. But after you narrow down your selection, these are the words that you weave into, and throughout the content of your website.... because these are the terms that search engines will look for.
